2013 Workers’ Compensation Fraud – A Family Business?

shutterstock_296820380I found yet another article where an employer in California, a father and son team operating as Sunshine Landscaping, scammed the California State workers’ compensation fund out of approximately $1.45 million in insurance premiums.  The employers did this by misrepresenting the roles and job descriptions of their employees in order to make their jobs appear less dangerous and thereby keeping their workers’ compensation insurance rates down (ie:  tree trimmers were classified as landscapers).  According to the article, the father and son scammers could be facing up to 19 years and 8 months behind bars for workers’ compensation fraud.

I sure hope the former employees of Sunshine Landscaping are aware of what happened and learned a bit more about how their workers’ compensation system works so they can try and protect themselves from becoming the victim of another dishonest employer.
