TMZ (www.tmz.com) recently reported that actor Jim Carrey was fined by the State of New York for not carrying the proper workers’ compensation coverage for employees of his art studio. Mr. Carrey was hit with a whopping $72,000.00 fine! I’m guessing workers’ compensation insurance would have been much cheaper!
A representative for Mr. Carrey did inform reporters for TMZ that this was a clerical error and that it would be taken care of promptly. I’m guessing they won’t be making that mistake twice!
Regardless of the reason for the oversight, I found it was encouraging to see that even folks with that star power are not above the law and are still expected to be conscientious business owners. I think this should also serve as a cautionary tale to those not-so-conscientious business owners!
